Francesco Loreto is an expert on biosphere-atmosphere interactions. His studies focus on the biosynthesis and emissions of volatile organic compounds, and on the impacts of abiotic and biotic stressors on primary and secondary plant metabolism. Dr Loreto is Research Director at CNR, has directed the Institute for Plant Protection (CNR-IPP, 2009-2012), and is now the director of the Department of Biology, Agriculture and Food Science (CNR-DiSBA) coordinating the activities of nine CNR Institutes and more than 800 researchers and technologists all over Italy. Dr Loreto has been a delegate of the Italian Ministry of Research and Education at the European Commission FP7 “Bio-economy” panel; and is a member of the scientific steering committee of the “Integrated Land Ecosystem Atmosphere Process Study programme” (iLEAPS), a core-programme of the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP). Dr Loreto has published so far (February 2016) 180 papers on peer-reviewed ISI-indexed international journals, with a total number of citations > 12000, and a H index = 59 (Google Scholar). He has also published 11 book chapters, and is editor of the book “Terrestrial photosynthesis in a changing environment” (Cambridge Press, 2012). Dr Loreto serves in the editorial boards of international journals in the field of plant biology, and as a reviewer of the European Commission, of main international research agencies (e.g. ESF, NSF-USA, ANR-France, FCT-Portugal), and of private foundations (e.g. AXA). He has been invited keynote speaker at more than 30 international conference and congresses about plant science, and has organized and chaired prestigious international conferences and symposia (e.g. EU-High Level Scientific Conferences "Photosynthesis in a changing world" Chania, Crete, Greece, 15-26 May 2003; Gordon Research Conference "Biogenic Hydrocarbon & the Atmosphere", Il Ciocco, Italy 2-7 May 2004; symposium “Photosynthesis and new environmental challenges” at the 15th International Congress on Photosynthesis - Beijing August 22-27, 2010; symposium “Life in extreme environments: from knowledge to sustainable exploitation of new resources under growing pressures” at the International Congress “Planet under Pressure: toward Rio + 20” London, March 26-29, 2012). Dr Loreto has coordinated four European projects in the field of biogenic emissions and their role in plant communication and plant protection, and is partner of projects funded by the European Commission within the frame of the FP7 Environment, KBBE and Marie-Curie-People programmes and in the H2020-MSCA programme. He now coordinates the Premium project (Progetti Premiali 2014) of the Ministry of University, Research and Education of Italy (MIUR) “Sustainable water management in agriculture”. Dr Loreto has coordinated CNR participation to the Universal Exhibition of Milan (EXPO 2015 – Feeding the planet, energy for life) as science consultant of the Italian Pavilion and of the Lombardy Region.
