Sustainable intensification of agriculture and forest production

Aims and objectives: An important challenge for humanity is that of producing enough food to sustain a rapidly increasing global population. This challenging goal must be achieved minimizing the environmental footprint of agriculture or in other words, by means of sustainable intensification, thus not requiring additional land for the production of food, globally. The expected changes in the climate and the necessary adaptation, adds more challenges to this goal, including the need of sequestering Carbon in agricultural soils and the non-conflictual exploitation of bioenergy.

Optimization of the use of natural resources by agriculture and forestry

Aims and objectives: In the awareness that human activities pose such a pressure that the ability of the planet's ecosystems to sustain future generations cannot be taken for granted the main aims of this Project area are the collection, conservation and safeguard of animal, plant and microbial biodiversity, the characterization and exploitation of genetic resources using genetic and omics approaches integrated by bioinformatics and the optimization of the use of natural resources, including in particular water and soil fertility, in different ecosystems.

Multifunctionality in Agriculture, Husbandry, Forestry and Wood production

Aims and objectives: The project area aims to contribute to the advancement of knowledge, scientific results application, promotion and dissemination of innovation in the field of non-food goods and services from the primary sector. The objectives of the project area are intended to enhance the benefits arising from agriculture, animal husbandry and forest-based sector, with emphasis on ecosystem services, waste reuse, recovery of by-products for energy purposes and for production of renewable raw material and high added value products, as well as promoting the development of rural and peri-urban areas. The activity carried out in the project area expects to contribute to the achievement of the objectives set out in the Community strategy on bio-economy, particularly with respect to research and innovation in the fields of the wood industry, green chemicals, biomass and bioenergy.

Crop protection and food/feed safety

Aims and objectives: The major objective is to implement expertise and know-how within an integrated system to support the food supply chain for the production of safe and secure food and feed. In this view, the new technologies are key tools to improve food safety, crop production, traceability in order to guarantee local products and Made in Italy.

New frontiers in food and nutrition

Aims and objectives: The activities of DISBA Institutes in the frame of PA5 can be grouped in 3 pillars:

-Functional food & nutraceuticals, aimed at the development of food prototypes enriched with bioactive components or with reduced levels of anti-nutritional molecules, allergens or harmful components to specific groups of consumers; other activities focus on the ability of functional food/specific diets to influence the health/pathological status and on the analysis of factors determining food choices and lifestyle in children and adolescents

-Food quality & transformation processing: food technology, biotechnology and immunotechnology activities aimed at improving the quality parameters of the traditional Italian food; other activities focus on the exploitation of nanosensing technology for detecting food molecules.

-Innovative packaging: new solutions to improve the shelf life of fresh/processed food by developing functionalized packaging, edible films, biopolymers or by applying GRAS substances.

Molecular and cellular basis of life of organisms

Aims and objectives: The project proposals included in the AP6 are aimed at: i) defining biological structures, ii) understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie functions, diversification and evolution of living organisms, iii) understanding the functional interactions among organisms. The main goal of AP6 is therefore to increase our knowledge about life at the cellular, whole organism or population levels. A second goal is to promote an inter-kingdom (e.g. microorganism - plant - animal) vision of the evolution of structures and biological processes, through the exchange of data, models and research strategies among researchers working on evolutionarily distant species. This allows interconnecting the molecular biology studies focussed on evolutionary aspects and their underlying genetics, which at DiSBA - CNR are usually confined within single kingdoms. Last but not least, the AP6 also stimulates and organizes events for the dissemination and popularization of scientific culture in the area of Biosciences. Improving scientific awareness of the general public is one of the key factors to promote progress of a nation and a positive attitude towards innovation.

The AP6 activities are in the area of curiosity-driven and fundamental (basic) research.
