Study of the molecular mechanisms that regulate the functioning of biological systems in plants, animals, and microbes, using multidisciplinary approaches. Development and application of biotechnologies for the benefit of agriculture, health, and the environment.
IBE develops multidisciplinary expertise in the bioeconomy sector, based on the study and sustainable use of the biosphere and renewable resources. It conducts research in the agriculture and forestry sectors, climate services, the wood sector, and industrial sectors involving the use and transformation of biological resources. It develops strategies to strengthen the resilience of ecosystems and territories to support climate change mitigation and adaptation policies.
CNR-IBBR pursues two interconnected research lines: Fundamental research aimed at increasing knowledge of the genetic and molecular bases of the functioning, adaptation, and evolution of organisms, including model organisms, and ecosystems; and the protection, sustainable management, and valorization of bioresources in the agricultural, food, environmental, and health sectors, developing applications for improving agroforestry production and disease prevention.
ISPA’s mission is achieved through the coordinated integration of expertise in agronomy, chemistry, agri-food microbiology, plant biotechnology, plant pathology, and food technology. These are complemented by cross-disciplinary skills in advanced diagnostics, omics technologies, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and risk assessment, strengthening the Institute’s role as a national and international reference point for food safety and quality and the sustainability of agri-food systems.
It carries out research, valorization, technology transfer and knowledge transfer in the field of food sciences, relating to the following topics: composition, quality and safety of food, effects of nutrition on human health, characterization and valorization of typical foods of the Mediterranean diet, genomics, metabolomics, proteomics and bioinformatics of food sciences
The IPSP studies plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses to identify resistance and adaptation mechanisms and develop sustainable defense strategies. It conducts research on pathogens, parasites and their antagonists, stress-resistant germplasm, multitrophic interactions, ecosystem services, phenotyping, remote sensing, and precision agriculture. With its five locations (Turin, Bari, Padua, Portici, and Sesto Fiorentino) and three research units at Terzi (Alessandria, Brescia, and Metaponto), the IPSP is a national reference center for the management of phytosanitary emergencies, including those caused by quarantine pathogens (e.g., Xylella fastidiosa, Bactrocera dorsalis, Flavescence dorée).
ISAFOM develops scientific solutions for the sustainability of Mediterranean agricultural and forestry systems. Adopting a “One Health” approach, we connect human health to that of the soil-plant-atmosphere system. Our priorities are: climate adaptation through advanced modeling (Digital Twins), efficient resource management with Precision Agriculture, biodiversity protection and waste valorization (Circular Economy) to support the ecological transition and European policies.
The ISB studies the chemical, physical, and biomolecular mechanisms that regulate the organization and functions of biological systems with a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach aimed at developing sustainable methods, processes, and technologies to optimize the use of biological resources for agriculture, health, and the environment.
The Institute’s mission is to improve the sustainability and efficiency of livestock and forage systems by improving yield, quality, and safety of their products, while also considering their environmental impact and animal welfare. These research topics are addressed with a multidisciplinary approach based on knowledge and technologies from biological, agricultural, veterinary, biotechnological, chemical, and food sciences.
