The project faces the common challenge of using agro-industry wastes and/or by-products from massive productions, such as olive, winery and cheese, extensively produced in both Italy and Greece, in animal nutrition. In particular, olive mill waste water, grape pomace, cheese whey, managed in a sustainable and eco-friendly way, will be used to produce bioactive feed ingredients for poultry, pigs or ruminants.
The main overall objective of the project is to produce higher quality feedstuffs using low cost ingredients (from waste) in an innovative way improving local agro-industry sustainability and competitiveness.
The principal expected change is to render the local agro-industry more competitive by producing animal feed enriched in bioactive ingredients and, consequently, functional foods, providing added value to local stake-holders, and preserving the environment by reducing agro-industry wastes.
The main project outputs related to joint pilot actions, will produce benefits for local stakeholders (producers, environment, local population) by increasing competitiveness, recycling wastes, and increasing the availability of foods enriched in healthy compounds.
The main benefit for the transnational cooperation will be the production of a common ?Mediterranean? product which will help diversify the industries of each partner and contribute to strengthen their completeness using by-products abundantly produced in both regions (wine, olive oil, and cheese, by-products).
The projects key innovation is the implementation of a novel way of using waste to give added value to the local producers and population, and at the sometime, creating new products with minimal costs.
