Relevance of flavonoids on drought stress responses in crop plants

Stresses negatively affect plant growth and development by altering biochemical and physiological processes. Due to the ongoing climate change, plants are currently challenged with new and/or more severe stresses such as drought.
Flavonoids not only behave as UV screening pigments and ROS scavengers under high UV irradiation but also, by virtue of their vacuolar compartmentation, are likely efficient substrates for the scavenging of ROS in plants challenged with drought stress. However, it remains to be addressed to what extent the ROS
Therefore, the goals of the present proposal are to investigate:
1) the morpho-physiological, biochemical, molecular responses of Wheat and Lotus to drought, and to drought and high air temperature;
2) the role of flavonoids on crop adaptation to above mentioned stress.
